An FCC Registration Number (FRN) is required before you can take an amateur radio license exam or have your results submitted to the FCC. Getting an FRN is free and only takes a few minutes.
Visit the FCC’s official registration system:
👉 https://apps.fcc.gov/cores/userLogin.do
Click “Register” (or “Create an Account”)
Enter your email address (this becomes your FCC username)
Create a password
Verify your email address when prompted
Log in to the FCC CORES system
Click “Register New FRN”
Choose “Individual” as the registration type
Enter your legal name exactly as it appears on your ID
Provide your mailing address
You will be asked for a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN)
Most individuals use their Social Security Number
This information is secure and required by the FCC
Your FRN is issued immediately
Write it down or save it securely
You will use this same FRN for all FCC filings for life
You must have your FRN before taking the exam
VE teams cannot accept SSNs at test sessions
Bring your FRN (printed or electronic) to your exam
